소개합니다.
저희 ‘농부와 고래’는 대구경북 농어촌마을연구소의 이름입니다. 우리는 농업과 어업, 기후위기와 생태, 전통과 기술, 그리고 이 땅에서 살아가는 외국인 노동자들의 삶까지 함께 마주하고, 함께 살아가는 길을 찾습니다. 관계를 잇고, 터전을 회복하는 일. 그 물길을 다시, 함께 설계하고자 합니다.
'Farmer and Whale' is the name of our institute — Daegu–Gyeongbuk Institute for Rural Communities.
We work at the intersection of agriculture and fisheries,
climate change and ecology, tradition and technology,
and the lived realities of migrant workers in the countryside.
We walk the water’s path in reverse —
to restore the ground beneath our feet,
and to reconnect what we’ve long taken for granted.
우리가 마주한 세 가지 일
농어촌 위기 전환
가만히 들여다보면,
마을은 여전히 무언가를 기다리고 있습니다.
기후변화, 고령화, 영세농, 단절된 계승, 위기전환.
우리는 농업·농민·농촌을 하나로 뭉뚱그리지 않고, 각자의 조건과 리듬에 맞는 다층적 전환 경로를 설계하는 일을 합니다.
Rural Transition in Crisis;
If you look closely, the village is still waiting for something. Climate crisis, aging population, small-scale farming, broken succession, technological shifts We move beyond the habit of treating agriculture, farmers, and rural life as a single unit. Instead, we design layered pathways of transition that reflect their distinct rhythms.
이주노동과 공동체
함께 일하고 있지만,
함께 살아가고 있다고 말하긴 어렵습니다.
다문화, 다언어, 이주노동, 안전, 존중, 공존.
우리는 이주노동자들이 마을의 동등한 구성원으로 존중받고 안정된 삶을 누릴 수 있도록 공존의 기반을 다시 세우는 일을 합니다.
Migrant Labor and Community;
We work together, but we cannot yet say we truly live together. Multiculturalism, multilingualism, migrant labor, safety, dignity, coexistence We rebuild the foundations for coexistence, ensuring migrant workers are respected as equal members of the community and can live with stability and dignity.
블루카본과 생태계
물이 흘러간 자리에
우리의 흔적이 남고, 바다는 그것을 기억합니다.
논, 하천, 갯벌, 토종자원, 탄소순환, 생물다양성.
우리는 흙과 바다를 잇는 생태적 연결을 회복하며, 블루카본 기반의 지속 가능한 생태순환 모델을 제안하는 일을 합니다.
Blue Carbon and Ecosystems;
Where the water flows, our traces remain—and the ocean remembers them. Rice paddies, streams, tidal flats, fermentation, native species, carbon cycles, biodiversity We restore the ecological links between soil and sea, and propose a sustainable model of ecological circulation grounded in blue carbon.
연구소장의 메세지
저희는 오래전부터,
"흙은 바다를 기억하고, 고래는 땅의 냄새를 안다"라는 말을 믿어왔습니다.
농촌에서 일어난 일이 결국 바다로 흘러가고,
멀리 있는 생명과 우리의 일상이 연결되어 있다는 사실은
이 시대가 품고 있는 가장 큰 질문이자 희망이라 생각합니다.
저희는 연구자이자 실천가로서
고요한 빛 가운데에서 사라지는 것들을 기록하고,
지워지는 목소리에 귀 기울이고자 합니다.
그것이 우리 삶의 깊이를 바꾸는 일이라 믿기 때문입니다.

I have long believed in this:
“The soil remembers the sea, and the whale knows the scent of the land.”
What happens in the countryside eventually flows to the ocean,
and the truth that distant lives and our daily actions are connected—
I believe it is one of the most profound questions, and quiet hopes, of our time.
As a scholar, writer, and practitioner,
I seek to record what quietly fades in the light
and to listen for the voices that are softly disappearing.
I believe this is how we add depth to our lives.
